Project Heartbeat’s Phlebotomy Training Program is offered in a part-time format designed to help students balance their training with work and other commitments. Class schedules vary by cohort based on instructor and program availability, with each cohort providing approximately 88–100 hours of classroom instruction and hands-on, in-house clinical training.

Our Phlebotomy Technician Certificate Program prepares students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to collect and process blood samples, interact professionally with patients, and perform phlebotomy procedures safely and effectively. All required clinical experience is completed in-house at Project Heartbeat, eliminating the need to attend a separate off-site clinical location. Graduates receive a Certificate of Course Completion and become eligible to pursue national phlebotomy certification and California CPT I certification.

Project Heartbeat is also an NCCT testing site, allowing eligible graduates to take their national phlebotomy certification exam at the same location where they completed their training.

Training is held at 333 Hegenberger Road, Suite 855 in Oakland, providing a convenient East Bay location for students pursuing phlebotomy training.

Project Heartbeat’s Phlebotomy Technician Program combines classroom instruction, hands-on phlebotomy practice, and supervised clinical training to prepare students for work as a phlebotomist. Depending on the specific cohort and class structure, the program includes approximately 88–100 hours of training.

Course instruction includes:

• Infection control, universal precautions, and safety
• Anatomy and physiology with an emphasis on the circulatory system and medical terminology
• Proper identification of patients and specimens
• Blood collection equipment, collection tubes, additives, and proper order of draw
• Patient preparation, site selection, venipuncture, and skin puncture techniques
• Post-puncture care and proper disposal of needles, sharps, and medical waste
• Preanalytical errors in specimen collection, transport, processing, and storage
• Recognition and response to complications that may occur during phlebotomy
• Professional communication, ethics, legal responsibilities, and quality assurance
• Specimen processing, including centrifugation

As part of the program’s clinical training, students complete at least 40 clinical hours, a minimum of 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures, and observation of arterial punctures. Students gain practical experience working with patients of varying ages and health conditions.

Upon successful completion of the program, students receive a Certificate of Course Completion and are eligible to sit for the national phlebotomy certification examination. After passing the examination, graduates may apply for California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) licensure.

CDPH-Approved Phlebotomy Training Program

Project Heartbeat is a private institution approved to operate by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE). Our Oakland Phlebotomy Training Program is approved by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Laboratory Field Services.

Depending on the specific cohort and class structure, the program includes approximately 88–100 hours of classroom instruction and hands-on, in-house clinical training. The program prepares graduates to pursue national phlebotomy certification and California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) certification.
