Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED teaches the skills you need to respond to illnesses and injuries in the first few minutes until professional help arrives.

Heartsaver is not BLS certification and is generally not appropriate for healthcare professionals who are required to hold an AHA BLS Provider card.

Choose Heartsaver if you are:

A workplace employee needing CPR/AED/First Aid certification
A teacher, coach, fitness professional, community member, or other non-healthcare worker
Required by your employer to have a Heartsaver, CPR/AED, or First Aid certification
Looking for general workplace or community emergency-response training

Choose BLS instead if you are:

A nurse, nursing student, EMT, paramedic, physician, medical assistant, respiratory therapist, or other healthcare professional
Required to obtain an AHA BLS Provider certification
Completing certification for a clinical healthcare program or employer that specifically requires BLS

Individual Heartsaver Direct Training

Currently available through a limited pilot program

Complete the course using a flexible self-guided learning format with online coursework followed by a hands-on skills session at a participating Project Heartbeat location.

Important: Heartsaver Direct does not include infant CPR training. Before registering, please confirm whether your employer, school, licensing agency, or other organization requires infant CPR. You are responsible for verifying that this course meets your specific certification requirements.

How Heartsaver Direct Works

Part 1 — Complete the Online Heartsaver Course

Complete the American Heart Association Heartsaver eLearning course on your own schedule. The interactive course teaches the knowledge you’ll need to respond to common first aid, CPR, and AED emergencies.

Part 2 — Complete Your Self-Guided Skills Session

Schedule an appointment at a participating Project Heartbeat Heartsaver Direct station. The station guides you through warm-up exercises, practice, and the required hands-on skills assessment.

Part 3 — Receive Your AHA eCard

After successfully completing the required skills assessment, your American Heart Association Heartsaver course completion eCard is issued electronically.

What You’ll Learn in Heartsaver Direct

During the hands-on session, you’ll work through realistic emergency scenarios involving cardiac arrest, bleeding control, and a severe allergic reaction. The station guides you through each situation so you can practice applying what you learned online.

Heartsaver Direct is designed for individuals and combines online learning with a self-guided hands-on skills session at select locations. Our traditional Heartsaver course is taught by an instructor and is available for groups of 8 or more at our Oakland or Sacramento campuses or at your location.

Is Heartsaver the same as BLS certification?

No. Heartsaver is intended primarily for non-healthcare professionals such as workplace employees, teachers, coaches, childcare professionals and community members. Healthcare professionals and healthcare students are generally required to complete AHA BLS Provider certification instead. Always confirm the certification required by your employer or program.
